Formation of Alaska Territorial Guard in World War II

Alaska Territorial Guard Formation

On 27 Aug 1942, The U.S. War Department authorized two officers to assist Governor Ernest Gruening in forming the Alaska Territorial Guard. The Alaska Defense Command detailed Major Marvin R. “Muktuk” Marston to organize the Guard in western Alaska and Captain Carl Schreibner to organize the Guard in eastern Alaska. The Alaska Territorial Guard was charged with guarding critical facilities such as bridges and communications stations where the active Army could not provide manpower and was made up primarily by Alaskan Natives. The Territorial Guard also served as spotters along the coast during the World War II and later as observers during the early Cold War
