6 January 1978 F-4E Crash Recovery

On 6 Jan 1978, an F-4E, 67-0306, assigned to the 43rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, crashed 40 miles south of JBER in a Class A Flight Mishap. The crew ejected safely after the engines flamed out. An HH-3E from the 71st Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron recovered the two men. The fighter penetrated the soft tundra nose first, hit bedrock, and then slid for a distance under the tundra—Alaska Natives from the nearby village of Tyonek assisted in the attempted recovery of the aircraft. However, the recovery team gave up due to water filling the hole.
